Amid the ongoing Peace and Democratic Society Process in Northern Kurdistan and Turkey, launched by Abdullah Ocalan on February 27, 2025, and accompanied by steps aimed at reaching a constitutional and legal resolution to the Kurdish issue, the Turkish Parliament is expected to debate the framework laws governing the process during its upcoming session.
In this context, residents of Çil Axa, located in al-Jazira region, told ANHA’s agency that the first of these laws should guarantee the physical freedom of Abdullah Ocalan, describing it as the essential step for ensuring the success of the peace process. They stressed that no political solution could achieve its objectives without his direct participation.
Mohammed Amin al-Daham said: “As the Turkish Parliament moves, more than a year after the launch of the peace process, to take legislative steps by adopting the framework laws, its first decision must be to secure the physical freedom of Abdullah Ocalan. He is the architect of this process and the only person capable of leading it to achieve its goals. Without his freedom, these laws will remain nothing more than words on paper.”
He pointed out that the success of the Peace and Democratic Society Process cannot be achieved without the participation of the initiator of the peace project, stressing that Ocalan’s continued isolation remains a major obstacle to reaching a comprehensive solution to the Kurdish issue across all parts of Kurdistan, not only in Northern Kurdistan.
Al-Daham emphasized that any initiative that fails to address Abdullah Ocalan’s legal and human rights would be insufficient to establish genuine peace. “What we expect from Turkey, as proof of its seriousness in seeking a solution, is the realization of Abdullah Ocalan’s physical freedom,” he said. He added that resolving the Kurdish issue requires genuine political will and practical measures by the Turkish Parliament and government to pave the way for democratic dialogue between Ocalan and the Turkish state in order to reach a lasting solution.
For his part, Mohammed Amin Youssef said: “Although more than a year has passed since Abdullah Ocalan launched the peace process, and despite the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) taking serious and practical steps in response to his call, Turkey has yet to take clear measures demonstrating a genuine commitment to peace. Instead, it has continued to pursue negative policies toward the Kurdish issue in Northern Kurdistan and Rojava.”
He added: “If we are to trust Turkey and its initiatives, it must secure Abdullah Ocalan’s physical freedom. Such a step would help build confidence and create the appropriate conditions for resolving the Kurdish issue and advancing the peace process toward its intended goals.”
He continued: “The Turkish Parliament is expected to issue the framework laws related to resolving the Kurdish issue soon. We stress that any measures taken in this context must begin with legal and rights-based steps that guarantee Abdullah Ocalan’s physical freedom, given that his case is directly linked to the course of dialogue and peace, as well as to the cause to which he has devoted his life.”
He concluded by affirming that Abdullah Ocalan’s physical freedom is a fundamental demand for them, as it represents the key to achieving a comprehensive solution to the Kurdish issue and establishing stability and peace throughout the region.
Robin Youssef also stated: “Any law passed by the Turkish Parliament that does not guarantee Abdullah Ocalan’s physical freedom and his right to hope will be meaningless. Such laws will remain merely written texts without producing any real progress in the peace process, because no solution can succeed without Abdullah Ocalan’s freedom, nor can we accept such a solution as peoples who have embraced his thought and philosophy as the path to our own freedom.”
She added: “Our freedom is inseparable from Abdullah Ocalan’s freedom, and any progress toward resolving the Kurdish issue across all parts of Kurdistan is equally tied to his release. Therefore, any law that does not guarantee this freedom, or through which Turkey seeks to impose peace without his participation, is unacceptable to us. We will not accept any steps in which Abdullah Ocalan has no role or presence.”
Robin concluded by saying: “We remain committed to our pledge to our leader, Abdullah Ocalan, who continues his struggle under the most difficult circumstances for the sake of the Kurdish cause. We will not consider ourselves truly free until we stand beside him and with him.”
